As part of my fieldwork for my Masters of Arts and Community Practice, we took a journey to Yogyakarta, Indonesia to visit a number of groups and organizations working in and around community, arts, cultural heritage and others. We were privileged to experience song and dance traditions from various regions of Indonesia and connected with local students at an arts institution. I was struck by the hospitality of everyone I met during my trip. With tea, homemade snacks and fruit, conversations were warm, intimate and inviting.

Each person in the program chose different methods to experience and record fieldwork: some taking detailed notes, others creating artworks. My intervention was through visual fieldwork through photography. I used my camera to capture the experience of being in Yogyakarta, on our journey, by showcasing the people, environment, hospitality, art and feelings of the places we went through my photography. In addition to our fieldwork, we also presented on a topic of research from our fieldwork masters class. Each of us had been exploring topics relevant to our own practice, and mine was regarding digital privacy in online spaces. Using Instagram, Facebook, Flickr and others as examples, I explored privacy policies and discussed how ‘free’ on the web comes at other costs, including your own intellectual property rights. I argued that while free services are widely available and have great advantages, it is important to understand who owns our work and data when we choose to interact on those networks. This is particularly important in my practice, as I share much of my work through online means, and rely on existing infrastructures to do so. As a creative and community technologist, I need to be aware of the implications of using ‘off the shelf’ solutions, such as Flickr, Google Drive, etc, and in what situations they can be useful. It is part of my practice to explore and understand the space of digital privacy and digital ownership.

My experience in Indonesia was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that has had a deep impact on my career and practice. It has broadened my perspective of community and culture and provided endless inspiration for my work moving forward. I learned how to communicate across language and cultural barriers and grew into my own as a photographer during this journey. I had the opportunity to participate in the Luminous Streets Festival in the Bass Coast region of Australia. As a photographer and fieldworker, I was excited to document the event and explore the area. What I found was a transformative festival that not only illuminated the streets but also the communities that surrounded them.

Throughout the festival, I focused on capturing the way people moved and interacted with the artwork installations. I experimented with different techniques such as long exposure to convey movement and intentional camera movement to capture the sense of moving through the light. By exploring the event from different perspectives, I was able to capture moments that conveyed the essence of the experience.

After the festival, I organized the photographs into two galleries, “Gippsland Fieldwork” and “Luminous Streets,” to separate the fieldwork around the event and the event itself. These galleries became part of a larger library of photographs that I can use for future projects and reflections on my photography practice.

The photographs also represent four broad categories that capture unique perspectives of the festival: discovering space, festival transformations, disorientation, and what is left behind. Each collection of photographs tells a sensory and emotional experience of the site, highlighting the undercurrents that might not be immediately visible.

Through my fieldwork and photography, I had the opportunity to connect with new people and immerse myself in the area. I suspended my own judgment on the experience and subject until I had the opportunity to refine and review my findings. This mindfulness allowed me to deeply connect with the site and capture it in a way that conveyed the essence of the experience.

In conclusion, the Luminous Streets Festival was a transformative event that illuminated not only the streets but also the communities surrounding them. Through my photography and fieldwork, I was able to capture the essence of the experience and explore it from different perspectives. The photographs are a representation of the sensory and emotional experience of the site, highlighting the undercurrents that might not be immediately visible.

As a Teaching Artist, I had the privilege of working with adults with intellectual disabilities in an arts program called Art Life. In this program, I developed and ran multimedia and photography classes that aimed to empower my students and help them discover their artistic potential. It was an incredibly rewarding experience for both my students and me.

My photography class was a unique opportunity for my students to explore the city of Melbourne through fieldwork in various areas, including nature, train stations, suburbs, markets, the Central Business District, and more. Through photography, my students were able to express their creativity and discover their unique perspectives on the world. It was amazing to see how their photography skills improved over time and how proud they were of their work.

The multimedia class was another platform for my students to explore their creativity in a broader range of topics. We covered general arts in multimedia topics such as Photoshop, stop-motion animation, and publishing. One of our most significant achievements in this class was co-founding the ‘Art Life Open Studio Coloring Book’. In this project, 38 artists contributed 87 pages worth of drawings, which we distributed throughout Melbourne. Proceeds from the coloring book went directly to the artists, which was a great way to support them financially and showcase their artistic talents.

The success of the Coloring Book led to it becoming an annual publication, which helped to build a sense of community and pride among the artists. The publication also allowed the artists to showcase their work to a broader audience and get recognition for their talent. It was incredible to see how this project brought people together and empowered them to express themselves in new ways.

The Art Life program provided my students with a unique opportunity to be part of the greater community and express themselves creatively. It was amazing to see how they blossomed and discovered their artistic potential over time. The program also had a positive impact on their self-esteem and confidence. Through their artwork, my students were able to showcase their unique perspectives and talents, breaking down stereotypes and barriers associated with intellectual disabilities.

As a Teaching Artist, the experience of working with the Art Life program was incredibly rewarding. I was able to witness the transformative power of the arts and how it can empower individuals to express themselves creatively and connect with others. Art Life is a program that not only teaches valuable skills but also helps to create a more inclusive and accepting society for people with intellectual disabilities.

Research Unit for Indigenous Arts and Cultures

In the vibrant tapestry of Melbourne’s academia, the Research Unit for Indigenous Arts and Cultures (RUIAC), under the Willin Centre’s umbrella, is a beacon of cultural celebration and preservation. I had the honor of documenting its nascent journey and contributing as a Community Technologist to its mission of empowering Indigenous voices through art.

RUIAC, in collaboration with the Willin Centre, champions the storied tapestry of Indigenous cultural practices, breathing life into a world where art is not just seen or heard but felt and lived. My role spanned a spectrum of activities, from capturing the spirit of RUIAC’s inaugural ceremonies through photography to participating in ethnomusicology forums and linguistics conferences. Each endeavor was a thread woven into the larger narrative of Indigenous cultural reclamation and celebration.

The ‘Discovery’ project stands as a testament to RUIAC’s dedication to redefining the preservation of history. It was an initiative I led with a clear vision: to create a repository that honored the past 60,000 years of Indigenous knowledge, breaking free from the confines of Western archival methods to embrace a system that was as organic and fluid as the cultures it sought to preserve. Yet, my role was manifold, reflecting the multiplicity of RUIAC’s objectives. Whether through the academic rigor of research and training or the creative expression found in cultural workshops and showcases, my contributions aimed to echo RUIAC and the Willin Centre’s ethos of innovation, advocacy, and intercultural understanding.

As RUIAC and the Willin Centre continue to illuminate the path for Indigenous artists and scholars, my experiences there have profoundly shaped my approach to community technology and cultural advocacy. By integrating technology with tradition, we were able to foster a space where ancient rhythms found new resonances, and where the voices of the first peoples could sing in harmony with the modern world. It is with pride that I reflect on my time with RUIAC and the Willin Centre, where every project, conference, and photograph was a step toward a future where Indigenous arts and knowledge are revered, robust, and resoundingly present.

In the heart of Melbourne, graffiti isn’t just a splatter of paint—it’s the lifeblood of a vibrant subculture, a visual conversation that has echoed through the laneways for decades. “Graffiti Down Underground” by Lachlan MacDowall illuminates this dialogue, drawing attention to the “layers upon layers of paint on walls that become sites of memory, battlegrounds of visual territory, and canvases for unsanctioned creativity.” This sentiment resonated with each step we took through the city’s iconic street art corridors, tracing the cultural significance of a movement that has transformed the urban landscape into an open-air gallery of transient creativity.

The laneways of Melbourne, steeped in artistic rebellion, reflect an ever-evolving narrative. Here, art is not confined to the static permanence of a frame but thrives on the ephemeral nature of the street. As MacDowall notes, “Graffiti is both an act of claiming space and a gesture towards the fleeting moment of its creation.” Our journey through these storied streets was a testament to that dual nature, where the fleeting life of a piece magnifies its impact, a transient treasure map of culture and counterculture intertwined.

Each wall we encountered was a palimpsest, its layers a chronicle of the city’s pulse, with new stories painted over the old, each artist leaving behind a piece of themselves. “The graffiti speaks not just to the city’s residents but to other graffiti writers, forming a visual call and response that stretches across time and geography,” MacDowall writes. This conversation was palpable in the air, as tangible as the spray paint’s scent, as we listened to the walls whispering the history of Melbourne’s artful insurgency.

Over the course of a day, we traversed the dynamic tapestry that is Melbourne’s graffiti culture, inspired by MacDowall’s profound insights. With each quote, each storied laneway, and each mural that caught our gaze, we were reminded of the power of art to challenge, communicate, and transform. The walk became more than an educational tour; it was a journey into the heart of a city that wears its artistic soul on its sleeve, inviting each passerby to pause, reflect, and perhaps to answer back with colors of their own.

Co-founding this program, I watched as Nickelodeon artists turned classrooms into workshops of wonder, where every sheet of paper became a window into a child’s potential, with figures from beloved cartoons to their own fantastical creations leaping from page to page.

Our sessions were energetic yet focused, a delicate dance between guidance and free expression. We, the team of artists and visionaries, some with a history in education, found a shared rhythm with the children. It was a dialogue of pencils and laughter, where teaching art was less about technique and more about unlocking the joy in every stroke. The art grew from their pens, but the confidence blossomed from their smiles—a silent yet profound testimony to the program’s success.

The accolades like the Golden Oak Award were affirmations, but the true measure of Let’s Draw’s impact lay in its organic growth, now reaching children in hospitals and through digital platforms. Three paragraphs can scarcely contain the colorful journey Let’s Draw has been, but they echo the essence of what we built—a legacy of creativity that continues to sketch joy into the lives of those young artists.

Welcome to my role in sculpting the Nickelodeon Animation Studio’s Internship Program, where creativity meets career development. As a forerunner in enriching the program, I leveraged my technical acumen and passion for mentorship to elevate the intern experience from excellent to exceptional.

I took the lead in introducing the Friday Nicktern Screenings, a weekly convergence that transformed passive viewing into interactive learning. Picture a room where interns, draped in the vibrant hues of Nickelodeon’s rich animation history, engaged with the very architects of their favorite shows—artists, directors, producers. This initiative bridged the gap between theory and practice, fostering a deep understanding of content creation that went far beyond standard internship expectations.

The Friday Nicktern Screenings became more than just events; they were a weekly celebration of creativity, a nexus where eager minds met industry wisdom. The laughter that echoed in those halls, the sketches that lined the walls, and the posters that interns proudly carried home were tokens of a culture that valued joy as much as education.

When it came time for the infamous sliming, it was not merely about tradition—it was a badge of honor, a story to tell, a shared snapshot of joy in their creative journey at Nickelodeon. It was a symbol of their initiation into a world where their creativity had room to soar.

The true measure of the program’s success, however, isn’t captured in statistics or awards—it’s seen in the trajectories of the interns who walked through our doors. To witness so many of them now thriving as creators, steering their own stories in the vast world of animation and beyond, is the most gratifying epilogue to our shared chapters at Nickelodeon. The Vault’s Top 10 Internship recognition is not just a laurel but a testament to the bright futures that were fostered within these walls—a narrative I am proud to have been a part of and to continue celebrating.

SIGGRAPH Computer Animtion Festival

2007-2009

Being part of the SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival was a highlight in my career, an experience that bridged the realms of creativity, technology, and community engagement. As a committee member, I managed a team of dedicated volunteers tasked with curating significant CG works from 1976-2006. This involved accessing a vast library of over 2000 videos, meticulously watching each one, and recording our insights in a shared spreadsheet. These notes formed the foundation for interviews with notable CG artists, producers, and festival chairs, helping us discern which works to showcase in our final displays.

Beyond the curation, my role extended into the broader festival coordination. I was responsible for overseeing much of the production and post-production processes, from the trailer to the festival titles. This required close interaction with artists submitting work, as well as collaboration with a panel of industry leaders in animation, VFX, and CG. One memorable project was working with the team behind Nickelodeon’s “El Tigre,” coordinating efforts to feature the show at the festival. This collaboration involved the show’s creator, producer, and post-production supervisor, showcasing the exceptional quality and innovation of their work.

 

One of the most rewarding aspects of my involvement was the opportunity to work with such a diverse and passionate group of individuals. The festival brought together people from all corners of the globe, each contributing their unique perspectives and expertise. This diversity not only enriched the festival but also highlighted the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in the creative industries. It was inspiring to see how different voices and ideas could come together to create something truly special and impactful.

The SIGGRAPH Computer Animation Festival was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective effort. My experiences there underscored the importance of detailed project management, the value of cross-functional teamwork, and the transformative potential of technology in the arts. This journey not only honed my skills but also deepened my appreciation for the intricate dance between art and technology, a theme that continues to drive my work today.
