Back in the Flow: Life, Work, and New Beginnings in Maine

The last time I wrote, I had just arrived in Maine, closing the chapter on my cross-country journey and opening a new one in my home state. And then… silence. No updates, no blog posts. Not because there wasn’t anything to say—if anything, there was too much. Every day has been full of settling in, reconnecting, learning, and figuring out what this new life actually looks like.

Now that I’m feeling more grounded, it’s time to pick up the thread again. The past few months have been about more than just unpacking boxes and adjusting to the cold. I’ve been rediscovering Maine through fresh eyes, jumping back into structured work, making new connections, and carving out the rhythms of daily life.

I may have paused my blogging, but the story never stopped.

Jumping Back into Development with Angel City Data

Working with Angel City Data has been a return to something familiar but also a big shift. I’ve spent the past several years working solo, building things on my own, setting my own deadlines, and handling every aspect of a project. Even when I was at Nickelodeon, I was largely self-directed. Now, I’m part of a team again, collaborating daily, and that dynamic has been an adjustment in the best way possible.

Joe, the lead developer I work with, has been an incredible mentor. He’s got a level of technical expertise that I deeply respect, and he’s also incredibly patient in guiding me through their systems and best practices. We check in regularly, bouncing ideas off each other, troubleshooting issues, and refining workflows. It’s bringing back so much of what I love about development—not just problem-solving, but doing it alongside other smart, passionate people.

A big part of this role has been sharpening skills I haven’t had to lean on for a while. Front-end design, scripting, database development—every day is a mix of familiar territory and re-learning. The work itself is deeply satisfying, but what’s been just as valuable is the structure. Twice-weekly team meetings give me a real sense of connection with my coworkers, even in a remote setting. We start each meeting by sharing something from our personal lives before diving into work updates. It keeps things human, which is important, especially in a team spread out across different locations.

One of the moments that really stuck with me was a conversation I had with my colleague, Deb. We were talking about how I’m adjusting, and I mentioned that managing ADHD and Bipolar II while getting back into full-time work has been its own challenge. She responded with nothing but understanding and support, even sharing her own experiences with neurodivergence. It made me realize that this is a workplace where people actually care about each other as individuals, not just as workers. That’s a rare thing, and it’s something I don’t take for granted.

Being back in structured client work after years of freelancing has reminded me of how much I enjoy this kind of environment. It’s busy, it’s engaging, and it keeps me on my toes. And at the same time, I’m feeling more capable every day.

Settling into Maine—The People, the Places, and the Unexpected

Coming back to Maine as an adult has been both familiar and completely different. The landscape, the people, the way of life—it’s all still here, but I’m seeing it through a different lens now. When I was younger, Maine was just where I was from. Now, it feels like a choice, a place I’ve deliberately returned to, and that shift in perspective makes everything feel more intentional.

One of the biggest surprises has been how much I’ve craved community since coming back. I know plenty of people here, but there have been moments of loneliness, which caught me off guard. Maybe it’s the stark contrast from being on the road, constantly meeting new people and seeing new places. Maybe it’s just part of the transition. Either way, I’ve been making an effort to put myself out there, to reconnect, and to build something new.

One of the best discoveries so far has been Maine Street in Ogunquit. Every Friday night, Luke and I drive down to this LGBTQ+ bar for a night of RuPaul’s Drag Race, karaoke, and pool. It’s quickly become our weekly ritual, a night where we can just relax and have fun. The bartender, John, already knows us, and the place has this welcoming, small-town feel where you start seeing the same faces week after week. It’s a totally different energy from San Diego’s LGBTQ+ scene, but I love it for what it is.

I’ve also been exploring Portland’s coffee shops, trying out different places to work from. There’s something about sitting in a bustling café with my laptop, surrounded by the sounds of conversations and espresso machines, that helps me focus. It’s part of my process now—rotating through different spots, finding my favorites, and making them part of my routine.

New Rituals, New Rhythms

If I could take my San Diego self on a day around Portland, I think he’d be pleasantly surprised. The day would start with brunch at The Friendly Toast, followed by a walk through the Old Port down to Bard Coffee, one of the best in the city. We’d stop by Portland Head Light, take in the rocky coastline, and then grab dinner in Falmouth before heading to Maine Street in Ogunquit for a night out.

That’s been one of the best parts of settling in here—building these new rituals.

Every now and then, a drive along the coast, just to take it all in.

Maine has a slower pace, but that’s not a bad thing. It gives me space to actually be present in my own life.

Living with Luke—A New Chapter in Our Friendship

Living with Luke has been one of the most rewarding parts of this transition. After traveling cross-country together, we already knew we could co-exist, but sharing a home has deepened our friendship in ways I didn’t expect.

One of our biggest bonding rituals? Watching Drag Race together. We’ve made it a goal to go through every season, offering commentary on the queens, the lip syncs, and the sheer chaos of it all.

Our routines mesh well, too. Luke works full-time, which means I have the apartment to myself during the afternoons to work. It’s a perfect balance—enough solo time to focus, but still having someone to share the day with when work is done.

Beyond just logistics, having someone in my corner during such a big life transition has meant everything. We’ve been able to process this move together—talking through the challenges, celebrating the wins, and figuring things out as we go.

Maine, Through a Different Lens

Maine isn’t just home—it’s an entirely new experience now. I notice things I didn’t before. I appreciate things that used to seem ordinary. The people, the community, the rhythm of life—it all feels richer.

But returning somewhere familiar isn’t the same as going back. I’m not the same person who left all those years ago, and Maine isn’t the same place I left behind. It’s not about picking up where I left off; it’s about carving out something new in a place that’s been waiting for me in its own way.

There’s a strange, beautiful contradiction in coming home: the comfort of familiarity and the exhilaration of rediscovery. Every street corner holds an old memory, yet every day I create something new. The echoes of the past are here, but they don’t define what’s next. That part is up to me.

This transition hasn’t been without its challenges—there have been moments of loneliness, of doubt, of wondering if I made the right move. But change isn’t about erasing discomfort; it’s about pushing through it, about learning to sit with uncertainty until it transforms into something else—something that feels like possibility.

What I do know is this: I’m where I’m supposed to be. The work I’m doing, the people I’m meeting, the rituals I’m creating—it all feels like the beginning of something bigger.

And maybe that’s the best part of all.

I’m not just coming home.

I’m building one.

Leaving the West Behind: Why Maine Is My New Beginning

Sometimes, life offers you a chance to come full circle. It’s subtle at first—a fleeting memory, the familiar rhythm of old haunts, a conversation that stirs something deeper. And then, like a tidal pull, it’s undeniable. You realize that the place you thought you left behind has been patiently waiting for you to return. Not because you’ve failed to find yourself elsewhere, but because you’ve gathered the pieces of who you are and now know where they fit. For me, that place is Maine.

Today, I’m thrilled to share big news: I’m moving back to Maine. After twenty years away—years spent living in San Diego, Arizona, and Australia, and crisscrossing the globe—I’ve decided to return to the state where it all began. The decision feels monumental, and not just because I’m ending my cross-country road trip early to make it happen. This isn’t just a move; it’s the start of an entirely new chapter.

Coming Full Circle

Maine is where my journey into creativity and technology began. As a teenager in Falmouth, I immersed myself in multimedia and web design classes, first dabbling in HTML, Photoshop, and video production. I didn’t know it at the time, but those high school projects planted the seeds for the career I’ve built today—a career centered on creative, community-driven technology.

Returning to Maine now, as an adult with two decades of professional experience, feels like rediscovering a beloved book from childhood and seeing all the layers you missed the first time. Maine hasn’t changed much in its essence—the dry humor of its people, the close-knit community, and the charm of its towns are all intact. But I’ve changed, and so the way I experience this place has, too. There’s a richness here I couldn’t see before, a sense of belonging that feels earned.

Finding the Perfect Home

The first step in this new chapter has been securing a place to call home. I’m excited to announce that I’ve found an apartment in Falmouth, just minutes from where I grew up. It’s a cozy one-bedroom cottage attached to a beautifully restored 150-year-old house, with a fire pit in the yard and bay windows that let in soft, natural light. The chef’s kitchen, with its granite countertops and gas stove, feels like an invitation to create something wonderful—whether that’s a new dish, a project, or simply a moment of peace.

The space reflects what I want this chapter to be: intentional, inspiring, and grounded. I’ve already begun imagining how I’ll arrange my work area, situating my desk near a window to let in the Maine morning light. The living room will be a place for relaxation and connection, filled with friends, family, and laughter. It’s a place that will fuel both my creativity and my sense of purpose.

A Network of Connection

One of the most exciting parts of returning to Maine is the proximity to friends and family. My brother Ethan lives just down the street, and we’re already planning long board game nights. I’ve also reconnected with my lifelong friend John and his wife Ashley, who just welcomed their first child, Finn. Meeting Finn was a profoundly moving experience—it felt like stepping into a new role as an honorary uncle, a role I’m eager to embrace.

Beyond personal connections, I’m eager to dive into Portland’s creative and tech scenes. Maine has always had a vibrant arts community, but it’s grown significantly in the years I’ve been away. Lessons From the Road

This move comes at the end of a transformative cross-country road trip. Each stop offered its own lessons, but the overarching theme was clear: follow your instincts. The road trip was about exploration and spontaneity, and deciding to end it early to start this new chapter feels completely in line with its spirit. The journey showed me that the best opportunities often come when you’re open to change.

That said, it’s bittersweet to leave San Diego and the West Coast behind. I’ve built incredible friendships there, and the laid-back yet dynamic culture of California has left a lasting mark on me. But with modern technology, staying connected is easier than ever. I plan to continue collaborating with my network in California while building new relationships in Maine.

The Vision for Microweb LLC

Microweb LLC is a cornerstone of this next chapter. I see it as more than just a business; it’s a vehicle for creativity and impact. Maine offers the perfect backdrop for the kind of work I want to do—projects that blend art, technology, and community. I imagine collaborating with local museums to create immersive exhibits, working with libraries to develop user-friendly digital archives, and partnering with creative professionals to tell compelling stories through multimedia.

Portland’s growing tech scene is an exciting frontier. With my background in digital production, asset management, and community-building, I’m uniquely positioned to help organizations navigate the intersection of creativity and technology. I want Microweb LLC to be a company that bridges gaps, solves problems, and inspires.

Looking Ahead

The next few months will be a whirlwind of activity as I prepare for the move, finalize my lease, and settle into my new home. I’ll continue to blog about the journey—both the physical move from San Diego to Maine and the emotional and professional shifts that come with it. The past few days in Maine have been a blend of deep connections, meaningful conversations, and moments of reflection. While I’ve been busy keeping up with my job search, networking, and creative projects, this time has also offered a chance to reconnect with the people and places that have shaped me. Maine has always held a special place in my heart, and being here reminds me why.

Celebrating New Life and Lifelong Friendships

A highlight of this week was hearing about the arrival of Finn Thomas Terison, the first child of my close friends John and Ashley. John and I have shared a bond since high school, where we formed TorchIt, our barbershop quartet. Performing together taught us more than just harmony—it instilled a sense of teamwork, trust, and a shared passion for creativity. Singing together, we navigated the intricacies of musical collaboration, a skill set that continues to influence my work today.w

Hearing the news of Finn’s birth brought a mix of emotions: joy for John and Ashley, reflection on how our lives have evolved, and a sense of gratitude for the enduring friendships that anchor us. While I couldn’t visit them in person yet, knowing that John is stepping into this new chapter as a parent fills me with pride. It’s a poignant reminder that life evolves, and yet some connections remain constants, adapting with time and circumstance.

Andrew and Scott continue to be incredible hosts at the Whitten House, a historic gem that feels like a home away from home. Together with Gabrielle, we’ve explored local favorites like Gelato Fiasco and The Abbey, soaking in the charm of Topsham.

I’ve spent quality time with my brothers Zack and Ethan, along with our family friend Josh. A particularly memorable evening involved revisiting a vintage board game, Lie, Cheat, and Steal. The game’s cutthroat nature brought out plenty of laughs, and playing it with my brothers felt like stepping back into childhood for a moment. It’s these shared experiences that remind me how important it is to nurture relationships, even amidst a busy schedule.

A Flavorful Escape at Siam Thai

Tucked away in town, Siam Thai offered more than just a meal—it was a sensory escape. The warm aroma of lemongrass and spices greeted us as we stepped inside, setting the stage for a comforting and vibrant dining experience. We began with crab rangoon, its creamy filling of fresh Maine crab wrapped in a perfectly crisp shell, followed by Tom Kha soup, a fragrant blend of coconut milk, lime, and chili that struck the perfect balance between soothing and invigorating. The Pad See Ew, with its caramelized noodles, crisp broccoli, and savory sauce, was the perfect finish to an unforgettable lineup of dishes.

Sharing the meal with Andrew and Scott added a deeper layer of meaning. Between bites, we reminisced about old memories, laughed over stories, and marveled at the authenticity of the food. I understand the value of in-person collaboration—the hallway chats, brainstorming sessions, and the camaraderie of shared office space. Yet, there’s an undeniable benefit to flexibility: the ability to tailor your environment to your needs. Some days require the energy of a bustling café, while others demand the serenity of a quiet park. For me, the ability to choose where I work has been transformative, allowing creativity and focus to thrive in settings that resonate most with me.

Staying Focused on the Journey Ahead

While these days have been rich in personal moments, I’ve remained committed to my professional journey. I’ve been honing new skills, like learning Figma for UI/UX design, and preparing to launch Scott’s revamped website, YourHistoricHouse.com, which showcases his passion for historic preservation. The balance of personal and professional growth has been challenging but rewarding, reminding me of the value in staying adaptable and engaged.

The AJS networking meetings continue to be a daily touchpoint, offering encouragement and valuable insights. Sharing updates with the group and receiving feedback has kept me sharp and motivated, even as I immerse myself in the slower rhythms of Maine.

The Power of Adaptability and Connection

Maine has been a powerful reminder that growth doesn’t always have to be rushed—it can be intentional and deeply rooted. The connections I’ve strengthened here, the projects I’ve worked on, and the inspiration I’ve drawn from my surroundings are all fueling my momentum.

Flexibility is more than a convenience; it’s a necessity in a world where creativity and productivity thrive in diverse environments. By breaking away from traditional office confines, I’ve found spaces that inspire innovation, offer clarity, and allow for a deeper connection to my work and my surroundings.
