My latest journey wove together family, culture, and career in a meaningful way. From a heartwarming morning with my cousin Anne in Scranton to my engaging interview with Angel City Data, the day was filled with memorable moments and opportunities. Touring Scranton’s historic sites with Anne connected me to family roots, while reflecting on my work with the Discovery Song Database reminded me of how tech can serve as a bridge to preserving Indigenous knowledge. The interview with Angel City Data underscored my excitement to join a team that values creativity and collaboration as much as I do.

Waking up after a full 12-hour rest felt like absolute bliss. The sun streamed through the windows, and the aroma of fresh coffee wafted up the stairs. Anne was waiting downstairs with a fresh pot ready—she knows me so well. A simple, continental breakfast spread of fresh melon, berries, and bagels awaited, giving me the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I poured myself a hot cup of coffee, toasted a bagel, and joined her at the table. We chatted about family updates and life in Scranton before setting out on a morning adventure.

Anne offered to give me a local’s tour, starting with some old family landmarks and winding through Scranton’s historic spots. As we drove past streets lined with old brick buildings and cobblestone, she shared stories about the town’s mining past and how it fell into decline only to rise again. We stopped by houses that once belonged to distant relatives, including the legendary Kinback house, where eleven children were somehow raised in one place—a concept both mind-boggling and impressive. Our final stop was at the cemetery to pay respects to some of our family members. There’s something grounding about knowing where you come from, and Scranton’s crisp fall air and bright morning sunlight made it a beautiful experience.

With the family tour complete, it was time to hit the road. I said my goodbyes to Anne, loaded up my car, and headed toward Madison, Connecticut, where another family stay awaited. This day, however, wasn’t just about travel—I had a big meeting on the schedule. Angel City Data, the software development team I’d been in touch with, had set up a technical interview with three of their lead developers. I felt a mixture of excitement and focus as I set out, thinking over how I wanted to present some of my proudest work.

A Pause in Nature and a Chat with AJS

Before the interview, I had a stop planned to catch up with my AJS networking group, which has been a rock-solid support system during this journey. I pulled over at a scenic rest stop nestled among trees and set up my laptop, taking in the crisp autumn air. This group has been a wonderful source of encouragement and insight, and today was no exception. There were familiar faces and a few new ones, each bringing a unique background to the table. After sharing updates on my travels and blog, I mentioned my interview later that day with Angel City Data. They responded with so much positivity, offering words of advice and a few useful power statements to keep in mind.

While the AJS group and I share our journeys toward new opportunities, I realize just how much this community means to me. We’re all in it together, cheering each other on as we navigate our careers and adventures.

The Drive to Madison

With the AJS meeting wrapped up, I got back on the road. The journey from Scranton to Madison, CT, was breathtaking, especially with the fall colors on display. I took in the peacefulness of the drive, winding through Pennsylvania and New York before reaching Connecticut’s coastal scenery. This drive, like so many on this trip, offered me a chance to think about the path I’m on, where I’ve been, and the next big steps. After all, the interview with Angel City Data was more than just a job opportunity—it was a chance to align my career with work that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

A Warm Welcome in Madison

Rolling into Madison, I was met with the welcoming sight of my Uncle Chris and Aunt Kara’s house. This place radiates warmth, with a big front porch, charming details, and the feeling that family is never far. Uncle Chris greeted me with his signature bear hug—he’s one of those big, gentle types who can instantly make you feel at home. The smell of something delicious cooking filled the air, and their three cats and dog milled around, adding to the homely chaos.

As I arrived in Madison, I was greeted not only by Uncle Chris but also by Aunt Kara and my cousin Eva, whose warm, vibrant energy filled the house. Aunt Kara, a nurturing spirit with a talent for making everyone feel at home, welcomed me with a hug and immediately wanted to hear about my travels. Eva, quick to join, added her own lively charm, eager to share stories and catch up. Spending time with them added an extra layer of joy to my stay, a comforting reminder of the grounding power of family.

After a quick catch-up, Uncle Chris offered his office for my interview setup, and I immediately felt like this was the perfect setting to jump into a serious conversation about my work.

Discovery Song Database: A Journey of Innovation and Cultural Respect

As I prepared for the interview, I knew the Discovery Song Database would be my main focus. This project goes far beyond typical technical work; it represents a crossroads of technology and culture that I’m incredibly passionate about. Born from a desire to better catalog and share Indigenous cultural knowledge, Discovery became a digital space where centuries of stories and songs could be preserved and appreciated. Working closely with Indigenous communities, we designed this platform to honor each culture’s history, making sure it was more than just data entry.

One of the most memorable moments of my career was introducing the elders to this database. Watching them navigate their history on an iPad screen, seeing their faces light up as they found familiar songs and stories—it was a reminder of how technology can be a bridge between generations. The Discovery Song Database now lives in arts centers and universities alike, providing access to rich cultural knowledge across borders. This project wasn’t just a milestone in my career; it was a testament to what can happen when empathy and innovation come together.

The Interview: A Meeting of Minds

At 5 pm, it was showtime. I logged into the Zoom meeting to find three faces on the screen: Joe, Chris, and Jake from Angel City Data. Joe and Chris I recognized from my previous visit to their office in LA, and Jake was a new addition. Each brought a different energy to the interview. Joe was thoughtful and analytical, Chris had a kind, steady demeanor, and Jake—sporting long hair, guitars in the background, and a cat making a cameo appearance—exuded creativity.

The questions they asked ranged from my technical experience with FileMaker and Claris Connect to broader topics on web applications and API integrations. It was refreshing to talk shop with people who really understood the intricacies of the work. When we got to Discovery, I was able to dive into the cultural impact, the development process, and how it’s evolved to become a vital tool for education and preservation. Sharing this with people who appreciate the blend of art and technology was incredibly rewarding.

Jake suggested I take a look at Figma, a user experience and interface design tool. This recommendation came at the perfect time, as I’d been meaning to explore Figma for a while. Now I had all the more reason to dive into it. By the end of the interview, I felt energized—this was a team I could genuinely see myself being a part of, where I could bring my skills and grow alongside them.

A Home-Cooked Family Dinner

After the interview wrapped up, I joined my family for a meal I’d been looking forward to all day. Uncle Chris had been cooking homemade meatballs and marinara sauce, filling the house with the rich aroma of Italian spices and tomatoes simmering on the stove. Our family is deeply rooted in Italian cooking, and it’s a big part of how we connect. The food didn’t disappoint—the meatballs were melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the sauce was rich and comforting.

The whole family gathered around, catching up on life, laughing, and sharing stories. It reminded me of just how tight-knit we are, each of us keeping tabs on the others, no matter how far we roam. After polishing off a plate of meatballs, salad, and garlic bread, I was feeling content but couldn’t resist a cookie or two that Uncle Chris brought out as dessert.

Ending the Day on a High Note

With the interview done, a fantastic meal enjoyed, and time with family to round out the day, I went to bed with a sense of fulfillment. It had been a full day in every sense, blending career goals with meaningful family time and a refreshing dose of nostalgia. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this journey, for the people cheering me on, and for the unexpected opportunities that come from simply being open to the road ahead.

How do you think technology can enhance or preserve cultural heritage in meaningful ways?

Starting my day early, I ventured from Erie, PA, stopping in a small Northeastern town for breakfast, where the charming brick streets and friendly locals brought out a sense of New England hospitality. Over coffee, I blogged about my journey and joined my AJS networking group from a nearby park, updating them on my travels and career pursuits. I was thrilled to receive an email from Angel City Data, confirming a technical interview with their team, a step closer to an opportunity I’m truly excited about. Continuing my drive, the scenic autumn landscapes of PA and NY felt invigorating, and finally arriving in Scranton, PA, my cousin Anne’s warm welcome and a classic Northeast dinner made the day feel complete. Wrapping up with family and familiar flavors, I was ready for some well-earned rest to recharge for the days ahead.

I walked into a local breakfast cafe that immediately felt welcoming. It was a classic spot with an open kitchen, where you order at the counter, and they bring your meal out to you. The cook, a big, friendly guy, was working solo in the back. He brought out my food himself, taking a minute to chat. We talked about the town, and I could tell he knew each of the regulars by heart. It’s the kind of place that gives you a glimpse into the rhythm of the town. I ordered a cup of coffee, and to my surprise, they had flavored options, a Northeast specialty I’d missed. There’s nothing quite like the hint of hazelnut or French vanilla in your coffee – unsweetened but somehow richer and more aromatic.

While I enjoyed my coffee, I opened my laptop and began piecing together another blog post. Documenting the trip every day is a challenge, but it’s become part of my daily rhythm now, a way to reflect on each day’s experiences before they blur together. I don’t want to miss a moment, so I type out the details, recounting everything as if writing it down will make it last just a bit longer.

A Morning in the Park and a Message from Angel City Data

With breakfast wrapped up, I headed to a nearby park. There was a picnic table shaded by trees, and I settled in to catch up on some emails and jump into my AJS networking meeting. The sound of birds and the rustling leaves made for a peaceful workspace, and as I set up my laptop and headphones, I was ready to dive in.

The meeting with AJS was energizing, as always. There’s something about connecting with a community of people who share their goals and insights that brings new energy to my journey. I shared updates on my travels, blog, and job search, and the group was supportive as ever. Their encouragement helps me find that balance between the personal and professional on my blog—one of those small but invaluable insights that keep me motivated.

And then, right in the middle of the meeting, I got the email I’d been hoping for. Angel City Data reached out to schedule a technical interview with some of their directors and designers. I quickly scanned my calendar and replied with my availability for tomorrow. There’s something deeply rewarding about seeing progress in this journey. With each mile, new opportunities open up. I felt ready, confident in what I’ve learned and the experience I bring. For a smaller company, being adaptable and able to wear multiple hats is essential, and I know I can contribute in meaningful ways.

A Scenic Drive through Pennsylvania and New York

After packing up at the park, I hit the road for the next leg of my journey, driving through the rolling hills and valleys of Pennsylvania and New York. Fall was lingering in the air, with leaves beginning to fall, and although the trees weren’t as colorful as earlier in the season, there was a peaceful beauty to the landscape. The overcast sky added a touch of drama, casting soft shadows over the hillsides, and the road wound its way through small towns and open fields, each one a reminder of why I love the Northeast in autumn.

I took my time on this drive, stopping occasionally to take it all in. There’s something almost meditative about driving through these landscapes, the road stretching out ahead, a destination to reach but no rush to get there. It felt like a quiet celebration of this journey, a reminder of all the different places and people that make up the country.

A Family Reunion in Scranton

By the time I reached Scranton, it was late, and I was more than ready for a break. My cousin Anne was waiting for me with her signature warm smile and a hug. There’s nothing quite like family after days on the road. Anne has this calming presence that makes you feel instantly at home, and after days of solo travel, it was a welcome comfort to be around someone who knows you so well.

After a quick freshen-up, we headed out to a local family-owned restaurant. Anne and I chatted over dinner, catching up on everything from family updates to life on the road and job searching. I ordered the haddock, a regional favorite I’d been craving since arriving in the Northeast. The fish was cooked perfectly, reminding me of the flavors and foods unique to this area. The waitress was friendly, with that subtle, no-nonsense sarcasm that’s just so Northeast. It was a wonderful evening of laughter and stories, grounding me after a long day.

A Much-Needed Rest

We headed back to Anne’s place, and I could feel the day’s weight settling in. I was exhausted, but in the best way, knowing I’d had a day full of connection and new experiences. Before crashing, I took a few minutes to review the day’s footage and make a few notes for tomorrow’s blog entry. Then, I collapsed into bed, grateful for a soft pillow and a cozy room. I slept deeply, the kind of sleep that only comes after a full day, and woke up feeling completely recharged and ready for what lay ahead.

My latest journey from South Bend, IN, to Erie, PA, reveals a tapestry of small-town charm, meaningful conversations, and reflections on building community across the digital and real worlds. As I settle into a local breakfast spot, the energy of the morning, the stories from local folks, and the atmosphere of rural America bring a unique pulse to my trip. Along the way, I connect with Redbau, the owner of Wildercraft, discussing how we might contribute positively to our virtual community during these divided times. Passing through Cleveland, I soak up city lights and enjoy the open road, balancing late-night work sessions with the excitement of each day’s new experiences. From creating content on the go to learning from the people I meet, this post delves into the small, genuine moments that make each stop worthwhile. Perfect for anyone curious about digital nomad life, personal growth on the road, and the unique blend of work and travel in my journey.

After a full 12 hours of sleep, I allowed myself a slower start to the day. It’s rare for me not to jump right into a packed schedule first thing in the morning, so I enjoyed every minute. Waking up fully recharged, I kicked off my day by editing footage, writing up the blog, and catching up on the previous day’s work. My room became a mini creative studio as I got into the rhythm of piecing together the journey and reflecting on how far I’d come. This blogging journey is as much about sharing my trip as it is about reliving it, and it’s brought a new energy to the experience.

After wrapping up my morning routine, I joined my AJS networking group from the hotel room. Even on the road, the group’s encouragement has been a steady source of motivation, reminding me why I’m doing this in the first place. Each person’s insight, feedback, and stories about their own journeys inspire me to keep pushing forward with my work, and it felt good to catch up with everyone virtually.

With my morning commitments handled, it was finally time to hit the road. My first stop was a small family-run diner, tucked away about an hour outside of South Bend, Indiana. There’s something about diners that brings out the best of any small town – a sense of community that you can taste in every bite and feel in every “Good morning!” My waitress was a gem, full of personality, and she laughed as I shared stories from my road trip. Between sips of coffee and bites of fluffy pancakes, I told her about my destination, Maine, and my goal to make it a cross-country adventure worth remembering. Diners just have this way of making you feel connected to a place, even if you’re just passing through.

Long Roads and City Lights

Once I was back on the road, I knew it was going to be a long haul. With a later start than usual, plus a few planned stops, I anticipated pulling into my destination pretty late. The skies were overcast and the air cool – perfect conditions for a reflective drive. These Midwest roads have a rhythm of their own, and I enjoyed the quiet as I made my way toward Cleveland, Ohio. When I finally approached the city, I was welcomed by the soft glow of city lights against the evening sky. There’s a certain beauty to cityscapes at dusk, especially when you’re just passing through, catching only a glimpse of all the life happening within. Cleveland felt like a quiet rush of energy, a nice contrast to the rural stops I’d been making.

A Call with Red: Community in Focus

Along the way, I touched base with Redbau, Wildercraft’s owner and a good friend of mine. We talked about the upcoming plans for Wildercraft and its role as a virtual refuge. Wildercraft has grown into a truly empathetic, welcoming place where people from all backgrounds can come together, build, and just escape from the real world. It’s a world that, for many, feels like a needed safe haven. Red mentioned how the recent election had sparked some concerns among players, and we reflected on the role Wildercraft plays in providing a supportive online community. The server is intentionally politics-free, but knowing we can be that place of understanding and fun means a lot. We tossed around ideas on how we could foster even more positivity, maybe by hosting some light-hearted events or offering a space where people can feel a bit of joy amidst all the outside noise.

Late-Night Work and Familiar Routines

Arriving at my hotel in the late evening, I was tired but knew I had more to do. The reality of life on the road as a digital nomad is that the work doesn’t stop just because you’re traveling – if anything, it becomes a little more challenging and definitely more rewarding. As soon as I dropped my bags, I set up my workspace in the hotel room, ready to tackle the night’s tasks. It felt familiar, like my college days pulling all-nighters for creative projects. Back then, I’d brew pot after pot of coffee (thanks to a job at Starbucks) and even bring a coffee machine to share with fellow students during those late hours.

Then there was my time at Nickelodeon, teaching myself FileMaker Pro at night and during weekends. It’s funny how these memories of working late became a comforting part of the journey. Now, as I pieced together videos, edited footage, and added final touches to the blog post, I found myself settling into the familiar rhythm of late-night work. Working long hours comes naturally, and being on the road hasn’t changed that one bit. It’s all worth it to capture each piece of this journey for everyone following along.

Roadside Reflections and Next Steps

This leg of the trip has reminded me that this journey is more than just miles on the odometer. It’s about the conversations that happen along the way, the unplanned stops, and the quiet moments where you reflect on what you’re doing and why. As I pack up each night, I realize more and more that every mile is part of the story I want to share, whether it’s through words, images, or video.

I’m looking forward to waking up refreshed and ready to tackle the next stretch of the journey. Each day on the road feels like a small chapter in this larger journey, and I’m excited to keep moving forward, one drive at a time.

Have you ever felt a place’s “pulse” just by visiting a local spot, like a cafe or diner?

My drive across Nebraska took an incredible turn when I got to meet a longtime Wildercraft friend in person for the first time. Darter and I have spent hours together building, managing, and laughing in the Minecraft world, but this face-to-face meet-up at a small-town diner was on a whole new level. Over waffles and road stories, we shared a slice of real life beyond the screen. Encounters like this are why I hit the road—and there’s plenty more adventure ahead to share with you all. Stick around to see what’s next on this digital nomad journey!

The past 24 hours have been packed with the kind of magic you can only find on the open road. Last night, a message popped up from DarterSwiftblade – or “Darter,” as he’s known on Wildercraft, the Minecraft server I help manage. For those new here, Wildercraft is a community-centered, cooperative server that I’ve poured a lot of time and energy into over the years. Darter’s been one of our long-time staff members, a friendly face for players and a reliable hand on every project. His message was brief but exciting: he was in Lincoln, NE, heading west. Meanwhile, I was on my own path eastward from North Platte. Our routes were perfectly aligned for a meet-up – so, of course, we set something up.

The Morning Drive with a Purpose

With a plan to meet for breakfast at a Huddle House in York, Nebraska, I set my alarm early. There’s something surreal about planning to meet someone you’ve only known online. Darter and I have been working together for a while now, but it’s all been through the familiar screen of Discord, our avatars and usernames filling in for faces and voices. Now, I’d finally be meeting him in person. There’s a mystery to that experience, like the first time you hear the voice of someone you’ve only read emails from – a piece of the picture you didn’t even know was missing.

With a two-and-a-half-hour drive stretching out before me, I hit the road under an overcast sky, the open landscape of Nebraska making for a peaceful morning. I shared my route on Google Maps so Darter – or rather, Hank, as he’d soon introduce himself – could track my arrival. As I pulled into the parking lot, I spotted him leaning against his car, as though he’d been waiting for this meeting just as eagerly as I had. We recognized each other instantly, laughed at the oddness of meeting, and headed into Huddle House to sit down for breakfast.

Waffles and Stories with Hank

It didn’t take long to settle in. When you’re at a place known for waffles, you’ve got to give them a try – so I went for a hearty breakfast plate with waffles on the side, ready to soak up the experience. Across the table, Hank felt instantly familiar, as if we’d known each other well before this breakfast. Over plates of food, we let the conversation flow naturally, with Hank sharing stories of his life beyond Minecraft. He works as an appraiser and auditor for car dealerships, a job that takes him across the country to various dealerships and showrooms. As someone constantly on the road, he knows this lifestyle well. He’s been to 49 states (only Hawaii left on his list) and traveled to every continent except one. We talked about our favorite places, with Hank mentioning a dream of visiting Australia someday. I couldn’t resist telling him about the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), a unique, underground museum in Tasmania that completely immerses you in surreal art installations. Just hearing about it seemed to spark something in him, the way only a fellow traveler would understand.

The amazing thing about meeting an online friend in person is that so much of the groundwork is already there. We’ve worked together in Minecraft, tackled challenges side-by-side in the virtual world, and shared in the quirks and joys of running a community like Wildercraft. But here, sitting across from each other in a quiet Nebraska diner, that connection took on a new meaning. When breakfast wrapped up, Hank insisted on treating me, a gesture of kindness that made the morning feel all the warmer. It was a reminder of why I value the community we’ve built in Wildercraft, one that extends beyond the screen and can bring people together in real life.

Onward to Des Moines

With a wave and a thank you, I hit the road once again, leaving York behind and setting my sights on Des Moines, Iowa. Nebraska’s endless fields rolled by, framed by a steady drizzle and low clouds. There’s something meditative about driving in that kind of weather, when the landscape is quiet, and the sound of rain seems to match the rhythm of the tires on pavement. The road was completely open, not another car in sight, and for a while, it felt like it was just me and the Nebraska plains.

These stretches of solo driving give you a rare chance to unwind and think. It’s been a busy trip so far, and there’s still so much ground to cover. Each mile brings with it a little reminder of past adventures – other times I’ve been on the road, places I’ve seen, and people I’ve met along the way. I found myself reflecting on my first big road trip years ago when I crisscrossed the country, touching all 48 contiguous states. It was an incredible, life-shaping experience, one I didn’t share with anyone at the time. Now, it feels like this journey is picking up where that one left off, only this time, I’m sharing it with all of you.

Arriving in Des Moines: Catching Up on the Journey

By the time I reached Des Moines around 4 pm, I was ready to get off the road and unwind a bit. My hotel was right downtown, and as I checked in, I took a moment to appreciate the charm of the city. Des Moines has this welcoming vibe that makes you want to stroll around and take it all in. But with a bit of a backlog to catch up on, I knew I had work to do.

Setting up my laptop in the quiet of the hotel room, I spent the evening editing video, sorting through photos, and working on updates for the blog. There’s a different kind of satisfaction that comes from sharing the trip this way, piecing together moments and experiences for others to see. Every new post feels like adding to a living photo album, one that lets everyone who’s following along experience it with me.
