In this article, I reflect on finding creativity during one of the busiest seasons of my life—packing for a cross-country move, starting a new role with Angel City Data, and managing Wildercraft. Through chaos and overwhelm, I’ve discovered unexpected moments of inspiration, whether through problem-solving in my new job, conversations with friends, or seemingly mundane tasks like packing and planning. Embracing imperfection, capturing creative ideas in real time, and thriving in fast-paced environments have taught me that chaos can be a powerful catalyst for creativity. This journey highlights the importance of staying true to what matters and finding meaning, even in the busiest times.

Life has a way of throwing everything at you all at once. You think you’ve got a handle on things, and then suddenly, you’re packing your life into boxes, coordinating a cross-country move, diving into a new job, and managing a community all at the same time. It’s chaos—but chaos doesn’t have to be the enemy. For me, chaos has become a catalyst. It’s where creativity thrives, where ideas emerge, and where I’m reminded that even in the busiest times, there’s space for inspiration.

Balancing the Moving Pieces

Right now, my days are full. Packing, booking movers, coordinating with cleaners, planning accommodations for another cross-country trek—it feels like my to-do list multiplies every time I glance at it. Add to that my professional commitments, and you get a snapshot of my life: diving headfirst into my role as a contractor with Angel City Data while still managing Wildercraft, the Minecraft community I’ve poured so much into.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Honestly, I do. But alongside that feeling is something else: excitement for what’s ahead and gratitude for the opportunities that make this all possible. It’s a juggling act, no doubt, but it’s one that I’ve come to appreciate. Each task, no matter how mundane, is a piece of a larger puzzle.

Finding Creativity in the Everyday

In the middle of all this chaos, I’ve found moments of unexpected creativity. Some come from the most routine tasks—like packing boxes—and others come from conversations, like the one I recently had with my friend Andrew. Andrew has a way of simplifying things, reminding me to take one step at a time. That conversation wasn’t just grounding; it was inspiring. It sparked ideas about how I want to build and nurture relationships in Maine, shaping not just where I’m going but how I’ll get there.

Then there’s my work with Angel City Data. Jumping into this role has been like dusting off a familiar set of tools and realizing how much I’ve missed using them. Solving problems, creating pixel-perfect layouts, and extending systems to meet new challenges—all of it has reminded me of how much I enjoy the process of building something meaningful.

Even gaming, a pastime I use to unwind, has become a surprising source of inspiration. Whether I’m in Minecraft or trying something new like Tower Unite, there’s something about those mindless moments that helps me sort through my thoughts. Creativity doesn’t always look like a grand epiphany; sometimes, it’s the quiet ideas that surface while you’re bowling online or exploring a virtual world.

Techniques That Keep Me Grounded

Amid the chaos, I’ve learned the importance of capturing ideas when they come. For me, that often means acting on them immediately, which can be both a strength and a challenge. It keeps me productive but also requires balance to make sure everything gets finished. Tools like Notion have been invaluable for jotting down notes and organizing tasks when my mind is moving faster than my hands can keep up.

I’ve also embraced the idea that perfection isn’t the goal. In times like this, striving for perfection feels not just unrealistic but unnecessary. Instead, I focus on being present, doing my best in the moment, and appreciating the progress I’m making. It’s about living fully in the chaos and finding growth in the process.

Finally, and of course, there’s my cat, Hobbes, who will be accompanying us on this cross-country journey. When asked for comment, he says: “meow”.

Lessons from the Chaos

One thing I’ve always known about myself is that I thrive in fast-paced, high-energy environments.
This busy season has reinforced that for me. Moving, for all its stress, is a meaningful act. Every box I pack holds something I’ve chosen to take with me, a decision about what matters enough to make the journey. It’s a process that, though chaotic, feels deeply creative. It’s a reminder that even in the most hectic times, there’s room to reflect on what’s important and to let that reflection guide you.

Angel City Data: Creativity in Action

Starting my role with Angel City Data has added a refreshing layer to this experience. It’s been invigorating to step back into development work, solving complex challenges and collaborating with a team that values precision and creativity as much as I do. The team’s thoughtful feedback and shared commitment to excellence have made this work not just rewarding but inspiring.

As a contractor, I also love the flexibility this role brings. It opens the door to new opportunities, new collaborations, and the chance to shape my schedule around meaningful work. Already, I’ve started incubating ideas for future projects and collaborations, excited about what the next chapter holds.

The Connection Between Chaos and Creativity

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through all of this, it’s that chaos isn’t something to fear—it’s something to embrace. The busier life gets, the more opportunities there are for creativity to emerge. Sometimes it’s in the quiet moments between tasks; sometimes it’s in the middle of the chaos itself.

For me, the key has been staying true to what matters. Whether it’s a new project, a meaningful conversation, or a seemingly endless to-do list, I’ve found that when I approach each moment with intention, creativity follows. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Moving Forward

As I prepare to hit the road again and settle into my next chapter, I’m reminded of why I do what I do. Life is chaotic, sure, but it’s also full of potential. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn, grow, and create. And that’s something I wouldn’t trade for anything.

What about you? How do you find creativity in your busiest moments?

Each day is a mix of excitement and challenge, as I scour industry trends, identify companies that spark interest, and tailor applications to show why I’m the perfect fit. It’s not a sprint; it’s a daily ritual of building momentum and finding purpose.

So far, I’ve sent out applications, followed up with recruiters, and even had some exciting interviews, including one with Angel City Data, a small but innovative team creating business software. While no offers have landed yet, I can feel the momentum shifting in my favor. Every conversation and connection is another piece of the puzzle coming together.

My background is varied—creative production management, community development, and creative technology implementation across fields like animation and VFX. Staying flexible has been my greatest asset, opening doors to roles I might not have considered before. Yet, the challenge remains: how do you define yourself when your skills span so many areas? It’s a puzzle I’m slowly solving, piece by piece.

The Power of Networking and Support

A huge part of this process has been the incredible support from groups like AJS. Every morning, I join a Zoom call with people from all walks of life, each navigating their own job searches. There’s something comforting about knowing you’re not alone in the process. At AJS, we focus on sharing updates, refining our personal brands, and providing feedback on everything from resumes to interviews.

One of the most valuable tools we work on is crafting “power statements.” These are succinct, impactful ways to describe your skills and experiences—mini elevator pitches that pack a punch. It’s not just about refining what I say; it’s about gaining the confidence to say it with conviction.

The blog has also become an unexpected networking tool. What started as a personal journey has transformed into a professional narrative. Sharing my experiences on the road has connected me with old friends, new acquaintances, and even total strangers who offer support or share their own stories. It’s a reminder that networking isn’t just LinkedIn messages and business cards—it’s about creating something that resonates and invites connection.

Balancing Challenges and Growth

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is balancing the personal and professional aspects of this journey. The blog leans heavily into personal stories right now, but I’m working on weaving in more professional highlights—like my technical interview with Angel City Data or the challenges I’ve tackled in my career. Finding that balance between storytelling and showcasing my skills is an ongoing process.

Rejections are part of the territory, but they’re never easy. I’ve learned to approach each application with an open mind but without attaching too much hope to any one opportunity. It’s not about being pessimistic; it’s about preserving the energy I need to keep going. Staying objective helps me bring focus and confidence to interviews, and it prevents setbacks from becoming roadblocks.

Expanding My Skillset

This journey hasn’t just been about finding a job—it’s been about growth. I’ve started diving into tools like Figma for UI and UX mockups, sharpening my project management skills, and using the blog as an exercise in communication and storytelling. Each skill I refine feels like another arrow in my quiver, ready for the right opportunity.

Documenting this journey has also been a lesson in balance. It’s easy to get caught up in capturing every moment, but I’ve learned that sometimes you need to put the camera down and simply experience life. Those moments of presence often lead to the best reflections later.

Personal Reflections on the Road

Traveling over 3,500 miles has given me a lot of time to think. Whether it’s the quiet of an open highway or the warmth of reconnecting with family and friends, this journey has been about much more than job applications. It’s reminded me of the importance of staying grounded, of taking care of myself, and of leaning on the people who lift me up.

These reflections aren’t just personal—they’re part of my professional journey too. Every conversation, every blog post, every step along the way is about building something bigger than myself. It’s about showing that the work we do and the connections we make are deeply intertwined.

Looking Ahead with Optimism

As I look ahead, I’m particularly excited about companies like Angel City Data and Clickup. Both align with my passions and expertise, offering opportunities to make a meaningful impact. The prospect of contributing to a team that values creativity and innovation keeps me motivated.

Staying optimistic isn’t always easy, but I’ve found ways to keep the fire burning. Whether it’s creating content, connecting with others, or simply reminding myself of how far I’ve come, I’m staying focused on the road ahead. This journey is far from over, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.

Sharing the Journey

If you’re navigating your own job search, remember this: you’re not defined by your career. Take time to care for yourself, connect with the people who matter, and approach each opportunity with curiosity and openness. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, but every step forward is progress.

What keeps you motivated during a job search? Have you found any unexpected strategies or tools that have helped along the way? Let’s share our stories and keep this conversation going!

My latest journey wove together family, culture, and career in a meaningful way. From a heartwarming morning with my cousin Anne in Scranton to my engaging interview with Angel City Data, the day was filled with memorable moments and opportunities. Touring Scranton’s historic sites with Anne connected me to family roots, while reflecting on my work with the Discovery Song Database reminded me of how tech can serve as a bridge to preserving Indigenous knowledge. The interview with Angel City Data underscored my excitement to join a team that values creativity and collaboration as much as I do.

Waking up after a full 12-hour rest felt like absolute bliss. The sun streamed through the windows, and the aroma of fresh coffee wafted up the stairs. Anne was waiting downstairs with a fresh pot ready—she knows me so well. A simple, continental breakfast spread of fresh melon, berries, and bagels awaited, giving me the perfect fuel for the day ahead. I poured myself a hot cup of coffee, toasted a bagel, and joined her at the table. We chatted about family updates and life in Scranton before setting out on a morning adventure.

Anne offered to give me a local’s tour, starting with some old family landmarks and winding through Scranton’s historic spots. As we drove past streets lined with old brick buildings and cobblestone, she shared stories about the town’s mining past and how it fell into decline only to rise again. We stopped by houses that once belonged to distant relatives, including the legendary Kinback house, where eleven children were somehow raised in one place—a concept both mind-boggling and impressive. Our final stop was at the cemetery to pay respects to some of our family members. There’s something grounding about knowing where you come from, and Scranton’s crisp fall air and bright morning sunlight made it a beautiful experience.

With the family tour complete, it was time to hit the road. I said my goodbyes to Anne, loaded up my car, and headed toward Madison, Connecticut, where another family stay awaited. This day, however, wasn’t just about travel—I had a big meeting on the schedule. Angel City Data, the software development team I’d been in touch with, had set up a technical interview with three of their lead developers. I felt a mixture of excitement and focus as I set out, thinking over how I wanted to present some of my proudest work.

A Pause in Nature and a Chat with AJS

Before the interview, I had a stop planned to catch up with my AJS networking group, which has been a rock-solid support system during this journey. I pulled over at a scenic rest stop nestled among trees and set up my laptop, taking in the crisp autumn air. This group has been a wonderful source of encouragement and insight, and today was no exception. There were familiar faces and a few new ones, each bringing a unique background to the table. After sharing updates on my travels and blog, I mentioned my interview later that day with Angel City Data. They responded with so much positivity, offering words of advice and a few useful power statements to keep in mind.

While the AJS group and I share our journeys toward new opportunities, I realize just how much this community means to me. We’re all in it together, cheering each other on as we navigate our careers and adventures.

The Drive to Madison

With the AJS meeting wrapped up, I got back on the road. The journey from Scranton to Madison, CT, was breathtaking, especially with the fall colors on display. I took in the peacefulness of the drive, winding through Pennsylvania and New York before reaching Connecticut’s coastal scenery. This drive, like so many on this trip, offered me a chance to think about the path I’m on, where I’ve been, and the next big steps. After all, the interview with Angel City Data was more than just a job opportunity—it was a chance to align my career with work that feels meaningful and fulfilling.

A Warm Welcome in Madison

Rolling into Madison, I was met with the welcoming sight of my Uncle Chris and Aunt Kara’s house. This place radiates warmth, with a big front porch, charming details, and the feeling that family is never far. Uncle Chris greeted me with his signature bear hug—he’s one of those big, gentle types who can instantly make you feel at home. The smell of something delicious cooking filled the air, and their three cats and dog milled around, adding to the homely chaos.

As I arrived in Madison, I was greeted not only by Uncle Chris but also by Aunt Kara and my cousin Eva, whose warm, vibrant energy filled the house. Aunt Kara, a nurturing spirit with a talent for making everyone feel at home, welcomed me with a hug and immediately wanted to hear about my travels. Eva, quick to join, added her own lively charm, eager to share stories and catch up. Spending time with them added an extra layer of joy to my stay, a comforting reminder of the grounding power of family.

After a quick catch-up, Uncle Chris offered his office for my interview setup, and I immediately felt like this was the perfect setting to jump into a serious conversation about my work.

Discovery Song Database: A Journey of Innovation and Cultural Respect

As I prepared for the interview, I knew the Discovery Song Database would be my main focus. This project goes far beyond typical technical work; it represents a crossroads of technology and culture that I’m incredibly passionate about. Born from a desire to better catalog and share Indigenous cultural knowledge, Discovery became a digital space where centuries of stories and songs could be preserved and appreciated. Working closely with Indigenous communities, we designed this platform to honor each culture’s history, making sure it was more than just data entry.

One of the most memorable moments of my career was introducing the elders to this database. Watching them navigate their history on an iPad screen, seeing their faces light up as they found familiar songs and stories—it was a reminder of how technology can be a bridge between generations. The Discovery Song Database now lives in arts centers and universities alike, providing access to rich cultural knowledge across borders. This project wasn’t just a milestone in my career; it was a testament to what can happen when empathy and innovation come together.

The Interview: A Meeting of Minds

At 5 pm, it was showtime. I logged into the Zoom meeting to find three faces on the screen: Joe, Chris, and Jake from Angel City Data. Joe and Chris I recognized from my previous visit to their office in LA, and Jake was a new addition. Each brought a different energy to the interview. Joe was thoughtful and analytical, Chris had a kind, steady demeanor, and Jake—sporting long hair, guitars in the background, and a cat making a cameo appearance—exuded creativity.

The questions they asked ranged from my technical experience with FileMaker and Claris Connect to broader topics on web applications and API integrations. It was refreshing to talk shop with people who really understood the intricacies of the work. When we got to Discovery, I was able to dive into the cultural impact, the development process, and how it’s evolved to become a vital tool for education and preservation. Sharing this with people who appreciate the blend of art and technology was incredibly rewarding.

Jake suggested I take a look at Figma, a user experience and interface design tool. This recommendation came at the perfect time, as I’d been meaning to explore Figma for a while. Now I had all the more reason to dive into it. By the end of the interview, I felt energized—this was a team I could genuinely see myself being a part of, where I could bring my skills and grow alongside them.

A Home-Cooked Family Dinner

After the interview wrapped up, I joined my family for a meal I’d been looking forward to all day. Uncle Chris had been cooking homemade meatballs and marinara sauce, filling the house with the rich aroma of Italian spices and tomatoes simmering on the stove. Our family is deeply rooted in Italian cooking, and it’s a big part of how we connect. The food didn’t disappoint—the meatballs were melt-in-your-mouth tender, and the sauce was rich and comforting.

The whole family gathered around, catching up on life, laughing, and sharing stories. It reminded me of just how tight-knit we are, each of us keeping tabs on the others, no matter how far we roam. After polishing off a plate of meatballs, salad, and garlic bread, I was feeling content but couldn’t resist a cookie or two that Uncle Chris brought out as dessert.

Ending the Day on a High Note

With the interview done, a fantastic meal enjoyed, and time with family to round out the day, I went to bed with a sense of fulfillment. It had been a full day in every sense, blending career goals with meaningful family time and a refreshing dose of nostalgia. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this journey, for the people cheering me on, and for the unexpected opportunities that come from simply being open to the road ahead.

How do you think technology can enhance or preserve cultural heritage in meaningful ways?
